Everything You've Ever Wanted to Know about Sinfonia
(Or, Everything We Can Tell You Without Killing You Promptly Afterwards)
|

The late 19th century was a time of great tumult, both politically and musically. America was still recovering from the psychologically debilitating Civil War and entering into a period of political isolation which only a world war would end. During this dark time in American history, a similar situation was occurring in the realm of the arts. However, a group of brave men at Boston's New England Conservatory of Music decided that they would not "go gently in to that good night." On October 6, 1898, a group of students and faculty led by Ossian E. Mills forged the spirit of Sinfonia in a kiln of such noble ideals as brotherhood, loyalty, musicianship, and nobility. From this synthesis of dreams came a force that has driven the spirit of American music forward into the pantheon of the arts. And now, 98 years later, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia prepares to begin a new century of promoting music in America. With over 126,000 initiates and 210 chapters and colonies across America, the spirit of Sinfonia burns brightly in the hearts and souls of the next generation of America's musicians, who spread the spirit "to instill instill in all people an awareness of music's important role in the enrichment of the human spirit." Quotes from Dylan Thomas, Themes for Brotherhood, and Unearthly Sources of Inspiration
Brotherhood
"If we are to live in acts of brotherhood, we must first think in terms of brotherhood. Before we can list the duties that we owe one another as brothers, we must first work toward a definition of brotherhood as an abstract concept, as an ideal. This requires us to distinguish between brotherhood and friendship, for although friendship is an essential element of brotherhood, Sinfonains owe certain brotherly duties to one another that are not considered obligations between mere friends. Let us then begin to examine the brotherhood ideal be recognizing what experiences are common to fraternity brothers that are not necessarily shared between friends."
